Her Father: A Memoir
Published in Paperback by Pushcart Pr (March, 2000)
Author: Bill Henderson
Average review score:

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Read
Bill Henderson writes so well about his life, his belated "coming of age" into this thing called Adulthood. His writing comes across as so completely honest that I felt I was at a bar with my good friend Bill Henderson, listening to his struggles with love and religion and dead and dying parents and drinking and trying to conceive a child...and trying always to live authentically. Though this may seem an obscure memoir, Bill Henderson is in fact a highly regarded independent publisher ( Pushcart ) and the "boss" of the infamous Lead Pencil Club, of which I am a member ( irony abounds, God Knows! ). Bill edited a book called The Minutes of the Lead Pencil Club; I liked that so much that I searched Amazon for anything else he'd done - that's how I found the wonderful Her Father.

High Season: English for Hte Hotel and Tourist Industry
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (January, 1995)
Authors: Michael Duckworth, Keith Harding, and Paul Henderson
Average review score:

Excellent Support for ESP Teaching
High Season: English for the Hotel and Tourist Industry by Harding and Henderson is an excellent textbook in the field of ESP teaching. What makes it particularly good is the fact that each of the 12 units of study included are clearly and equally divided into the following categories: TOPIC, LISTENING, SPEAKING,READING ,WRITING, LANGUAGE STUDY, WORD STUDy, ACTIVITIES. The communicative approach is made evident throughout the book as is suggested by the activities proposed and the functional approach given to the language study section. I have worked with this book in my English courses in Oaxaca, which are oriented towards people working in the tourist industry. M y students have found it to be a very useful and enjoyable way to learn the English they need for their jobs.

History Of Texas (2 Volumes)
Published in Library Binding by Reprint Services Corp (January, 1856)
Author: Henderson Yoakum
Average review score:

A most detailed and accurate book on Texas History.
"History of Texas" Vol. 1, by H. Yoakum, esq., published by the Steck Co., Austin. Texas, 1935, is for the serious student of Texas history. It gives details that are seldom, if ever, found in later Texas History books. Having been written in the 1850's, it is not tainted by revisionist historians (I use the term "historian" very loosely there). Although it may sometimes appear boring, the one who truly wants to grasp what happened in the years from 1685 to 1846 in Texas can find no better place to go than to this publication. I have not been able to obtain Vol. 2 and would sincerely appreciate the opportunity to purchase that volume as I am sure it is also an excellent edition. I would like to add it to my library if possible.

Wonderful family saga.
I found this book to be real page turner. I was disappointed when I got to the last page and had to put it down. I passed it on to another John Jakes fan. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a book that spans generations. I am eagerly awating the the arrival of the next book in the series.

Housing and the Democratic Ideal

Author: A. Scott Henderson

Song of the Unsung
First, let the record reflect that Professor Henderson is a beautiful writer. This biography of a quietly insistent policymaker is painstakingly researched; more importantly, it's thoughtfully analyzed in a way that makes the New Deal relevant to today's issues.

How to Train Singers: With Illustrated Natural Techniques & Audio Exercises
Published in Plastic Comb by Parker (October, 2001)
Author: Larra Browning Henderson
Average review score:

A truly great book on voice training
This book has so much information I don't know where to start. The author was one of the greats as far as teaching voice and her students have gone on to sing professionally in very demanding capacities without vocal injuries and with beautiful sound - and isn't that what vocal training is all about?

There is a chapter on basic care of the voice - stuff I never knew in 8 years of lessons - don't subject yourself to radical changes in temperature, don't use numbing sprays in your throat, etc. There is another chapter on what to do for vocal nodes, another deals with diction (that chapter alone improved my tone and changed the responation to more in the mask - it was amazing).

For the voice teacher, there are exercises for developing a healthy technique in the students. It covers from beginning to advanced and there are some great chapters on breathing and Alexander Technique - which is taught at most of the Conservatories as a part of the training of serious students of voice. Very informative and has some good resources listed for further research.

Like the guy said in teh review of the previous edition, these books are not bound very well but he woujldn't be so upset about that if it wasn't one of those books you have to keep referring to because the information is so good. If it was a lesser book, then he wouldn't want to open it every 5 minutes and it wouldn't matter what the binding was like.

If You Choose Not to Hit
Published in Paperback by Educational Media Corporation (January, 2001)
Authors: Kathy Beckwith and Carol Henderson
Average review score:

Empowering Kids to Make Smart Choices (and have more fun!)
Funny, realistic, and absolutely usable. Those were goals I set for myself as I wrote this book. Kids' lives can be pretty rough sometimes, but how they respond is ultimately their choice. I believe kids will make smart choices - if they're encouraged to do it, if they're shown how to do it, and if they can see that it really works. That's what IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO HIT is all about. And it's not just about hitting or not hitting. It's about kids working through problems of all kinds, using their "smarts," and learning what works.
I also love to laugh and have fun, so it was super to work with Carol Henderson (the illustrator of the book) creating a group of animals that got into all kinds of pickles and showed us how they could use the same skills that the real-life kids in the book use.
The book's full title is "a little nonsense and a lot of good sense about... IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO HIT." The "nonsense" is a bit of rollickying rhyme that will have kids laughing as they read along, and the "good sense" will give them tools to work through situations that they will recognize as very true-to-life. They'll learn skills they will use all their lives long.
I believe you'll find this one of the most practical resource books a child (or an adult) can own!
